CHENNAI: A woman who got obscene calls and videos from anonymous phone numbers on WhatsApp laid a trap and caught her tormentor with the help of her family members in Arumbakkam on Wednesday night.
Nandhini (named changed) has been living with her parents in Arumbakkam for the last four years. She was living separately from her husband as the duo were not on good terms.
On August 4, she got a call from a mobile number where the caller spoke in an obscene manner and she disconnected the call.
Since then, she kept receiving calls from different phone numbers and the caller, who appeared to the same person, continued to abuse her verbally. On August 8, after she received porn videos on WhatsApp.
She informed her parents about the calls and the videos. But before alerting police, the family members hatched a plan to catch the man.
She messaged the man on WhatsApp inviting him to her house in Arumbakkam for a chat. She texted him the house address. The man agreed to visit her.
On the scheduled day, Nandhini stayed in a room while other family members hid themselves in another one.
When the man reached the house, Nandhini took him into her room and all of a sudden, all the family members surrounded and beat the man up. Later, they alerted the police control room, police said.

A team from the Choolaimedu police station rushed to the house and secured the man identified as R Vimalraj, 29, of Tiruttani. He works as delivery agent for an e-commerce firm. During the course of interrogations, Vimalraj reportedly told police that he randomly collected phone numbers and made calls to them. If it was woman, he continued to harass them. He was booked under the Women Harassment Act and the IT Act and remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday night.
Police said that the family suspected the hand of Nandhini’s estranged husband in the incident. They would also question him in this connection.
