Gun firing involving Tamil Nadu MLA: Businessman arrested
CHENNAI: A businessman has been arrested in connection with a gun firing in Illalur village near Mamallapuram on Saturday. The incident which involved a fight between two groups of men over a property resulted in the arrest of DMK MLA L Idhayavarman.
A police team has detained real estate businessman 'Imayam' G Kumar for questioning on Sunday. He was produced before the magistrate on Monday, said the police.
The investigation officers claimed they arrested Kumar based on Idhayavarman’s father, Lakshmipathi's complaint.
Lakshmipathi's complaint mentioned the names of K Raguraman, M Janarthanam, and M Shanmugam along with a few other unidentified persons.
Police booked cases against the three and 50 other unnamed people in connection with the fight. The police have also arrested Idhayavarman and 12 others.
The incident took place on Saturday afternoon, just a few metres away from Tiruporur MLA Idhayavarman's residence. The clash broke out when G Kumar travelled in a car with a few friends and his brother, Thandavamurthy, an AMMK worker. Kumar and his group went to the location to fix the damaged path at the disputed property, which he claims is his own land.
In his complaint, Kumar alleged that Lakshmipathy had got into an argument with his earthmoving operator. Lakshmipathi claimed in his complaint that he had gone to mediate as two groups of men were arguing over the land dispute.
The argument escalated into a physical fight and MLA Idhayavarman and his father Lakshmipathi allegedly opened fire on Kumar in which a passer-by from a neighbouring village, identified as Srinivasan, suffered injuries. Srinivasan, who also filed a complaint, stated he suffered injuries after Idhayavarman opened fire at him.
