CHENNAI: A day after three technicians died and nine others suffered injuries in an accident in a shooting location of his “Indian 2” movie, actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan on Thursday announced a total compensation of Rs 1 crore to the kin of the deceased and to the injured.
A crane fell on technicians during the film shooting at EVP Film City on the outskirts of Chennai on Wednesday night.

On Thursday afternoon, Kamal visited the family members of the deceased whose bodies are kept in the mortuary of the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital. S Shankar, who is directing the movie, also visited the family members of the deceased.
Later, talking to reporters, Kamal said, “I had a narrow escape. Just four seconds ago, I entered the canopy and was lucky to survive. If the crane had fallen a few inches away, I would have been in mortuary and somebody would have been here to speak.”
He said it was shameful to see that the cinema industry was not able to provide safe working conditions to its technicians. “I have been in this industry since my childhood, and this incident has once again proved that there is no safety compliance,” he said.
“I have come here as a family member. We boast about big budget films and there is no point in boasting without providing safety to people working for the movies,” he said.
The actor said the whole cinema industry should come together to ensure that the technicians get necessary safety and insurance.
Lyca Productions, that is producing the movie, announced a Rs 2crore compensation to the families of both deceased and the injured.
