Sathankulam custodial deaths: CBI submits status report

MADURAI: The CBI probing the deaths of P Jeyaraj and his son J Beniks at Sathankulam submitted a second status report regarding the progress made in the investigation, in a sealed cover, on Monday.
The court was hearing the suo motu public interest litigation initiated following the custodial deaths of the father-son duo. A division bench of Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice P Rajamanickam observed that the CBI report provides details on a meeting of the medical board of forensic medicine experts constituted by the director-general of health services, New Delhi, which was convened on September 1 to discuss the custodial deaths.

The judges also observed that the experts would be convening another meeting which would be followed by a visit to the place of occurrence and Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital and an interaction with the doctors concerned.
The judges observed that it was also stated in the status report that a multidisciplinary team of Central Forensic Science Laboratory, New Delhi, could not visit the scene of occurrence due to the Covid-19 outbreak and also because they have also been assigned duty relating to actor Sushant Singh Rajput's case. . The report suggested that the investigation is in progress.
Pursuant to the earlier order of this court, the CB-CID had also submitted a status report on the progress in the investigation on the alleged torture meted out to S Raja Singh, arrested in another case by the Sathankulam policemen.
The report suggests that 28 witnesses have been examined and 12 documents have been collected. The CB-CID had also mentioned the need for more time to examine other witnesses and collect other documents related to this case.
The case was adjourned to September 22 for further hearing.
