CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday extended a warm welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will be arriving in the city for a two-day summit beginning October 11.
In a statement, the chief minister said the meeting to improve the cordial relationship between the countries was a matter of pride to Tamil Nadu.
“I extend my thanks to Prime Minister Modi for selecting Mamallapuram as the venue.
I welcome the leaders on behalf of people of Tamil Nadu and Tamil Nadu government,” Palaniswami said. He requested the people to give a rousing reception to the leaders.
Recalling the historic trade and cultural ties between Tamil Nadu and China and the visit of renowned Buddhist monk and traveller Xuanzang’s visit to the ancient town in the seventh century, the chief minister said the selection of the historic place was very apt. “The trade links between the Cholas and the Chinese brings pride to the Tamils. I wish to remind the visit of first Chinese premier Zhou Enlai in 1956 to Kulipanthadalam near Mamallapuram,” the CM said.
“It is a historic moment for not only Tamil Nadu but that of India,” Palaniswami said.
