Coimbatore: Corporation may seek Anna University aid to study rise in garbage generation
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation is likely to approach Anna University or a private concern, which specializes in the field of solid waste management, to study the reasons behind the sudden raise in the garbage generation in the city.
In the last few months, the quantity of garbage dumped in the Vellalore dump yard has increased from 800 tonnes to 1,000 – 1,200 tonnes per day.

To understand the actual reasons behind it and to design projects for the scientific disposal of the wastes, the corporation sought the assistance of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) a couple of months ago.
“The civic body requested the university to conduct the study on three aspects – quantification, composition and analyzing the quality of the wastes. But the university agreed to do the analysis part alone,” a corporation source said.
“The exact contents, like percentage of heavy metals, its caloric values and pH value, could be figured out only through analysis. Based on the results, the corporation could design a project for the safe disposal of the garbage. For example, if the presence of heavy metal is high at the garbage collected from a collection point, then it could not be turned into compost and a different solution needs to be found out,” the source explained.

But it is only the last stage of the study and before that we will have understand the two other aspects, the source said, explaining that by studying the composition of the garbage, percentage of recyclable wastes, biodegradable wastes, non-biodegradable wastes and hazardous wastes could be identified.
As the TNAU is firm on its stand that they could do only analysis part, we have no option but to look for alternative source to conduct the study, the source said, adding that they have been planning to approach either Anna University or a private company who has specialized in the field of solid waste management.
An official from the university said the discussion is still in the preliminary stage and they are yet to arrive at a final decision.
“There are about 500 garbage collection points in the city, so the number of samples that would be involved in the process on the daily basis would be really high. With the limited manpower that the university has, we could extend our assistance only to an extent. So, we have asked the corporation to provide us the final samples to analyze them,” the official added.
