Industry welcomes bid to set up textile park
Coimbatore: The confederation of Indian textile industry (Citi) has welcomed the ministry of textiles’ announcement to set up a mega textile park in Tamil Nadu’s western region.
The park is expected to help stakeholders scale up operation to meet global demand. Citi said the park will enable the powerloom sector and other decentralized sectors to consolidate in different clusters and start affording modern technology.
Scaling up operations will also help them compete with countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam that had entered the sector recently.
Citi chairman T Rajkumar issued a statement on Friday, appreciating the initiative to encourage scale of operations through the mega textile park scheme. “The flagship technology upgradation fund scheme (TUFS), has already attracted over Rs 4 lakh-crore during the last two decades. The scheme for integrated textile parks will enable decentralized sectors to consolidate in clusters and go for modern technology,” he said.
Textiles secretary Ravi Capoor had met industry stakeholders to discuss and get inputs for framing the scheme on February 17. Citi also welcomed textile minister Smriti Irani’s efforts to formulate the new textile policy expected to be announced this year.
