Race Course model road project shifts to top gear
Coimbatore: One-and-a-half years after proposing to turn the Race Course Road into a model road under the smart cities mission, the city corporation has obtained approval from the mission’s high-powered steering committee.
The road and its scheme road for about three kilometres will be developed into a model road by incorporation innovative components at the cost of Rs 40.67 crore, a corporation official said.
The corporation has floated tender for the work and the bid will open on March 11.
Whenever the project inched close to clearance, objections were raised pertaining to the components. As a result, the consultant designing the project as well as officials of the smart city ended up redesigning it. The team managed to obtain the nod recently after a long struggle.
The project will kick-off within a couple of weeks after a suitable bidder is selected, the official said. “The stretch is one of the vibrant public places in the city. It has its own residential and commercial space. We have designed the project by retaining its uniqueness.”
“In addition to the existing footpath, a footpath and a separate parking space will be created. While the existing footpath can be used for walking or jogging, the other one can be used by retail users,” the official said.
The men’s gym will be renovated and fitted with synthetic rubber flooring. More equipment will be installed.
Another workout area for women and a children’s park will be set up near the State Judicial Academy. “Thus, mothers making use of the gym will be able to keep an eye on their children,” the official said. “The children’s park near the Government Arts College will be turned into an amphitheatre.”
All junctions under the project will be redesigned. “Table-top zebra crossings and pedestrian islands will be set up. Utilities including power lines and telecom cables will pass under the ground,” the official said. “Apart from maintaining green space along the road, more green space will be created. Designated space will be allotted to street vendors. Information boards, water fountains and shaded walkways will also be set up.”
