COIMBATORE: A student from Tamil Nadu pursuing a PG course in Canada’s York University was stabbed by a suspected stalker on her way back home from the institute on Thursday. She was admitted to an intensive care facility and is believed to be critical. The suspect has been arrested.
Canadian authorities who contacted the parents of Angeline Rachel, 23, from Coonoor in Nilgiris, have advised them to come to Canada immediately.
The parents are waiting for their visas and are likely to leave on Saturday. Foreign minister S Jaishankar has asked MEA officials to help with the family’s visa request.
Rachel, who was pursuing a one-year course in masters in supply chain management, was staying in an apartment near the university. She is scheduled to complete the course in April.
“My daughter was an outstanding student. She did her schooling in Coonoor and completed her UG at Christ University, Bengaluru. She was working for three years before she got selected for the PG programme,” said her father Albert Rajkumar. “She was very active on social media and a student who seemed like an Indian would often disturb her on social media. I spoke to my daughter on Thursday morning (IST) and she was fine. But later that night, we got a call from Canadian authorities saying that she was stabbed by an unidentified man who looked like an Indian,” Rajkumar said.
“The suspect has been arrested by the Canadian police,” he added.
