PANAJI: BJP on Monday said that the Citizens Amendment Act (CAA) will not have any impact on the Christian community in Goa and flayed the Congress for misleading the people on the issue.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has attempted to correct a “historical wrong” through CAA, BJP general secretary Narendra Sawaikar told reporters.
For 50 years, Congress tried to play vote bank politics, but when the government decided to empower people through CAA, Congress and its allies are playing the communal card and using divisive tactics, he said.

Reacting to Congress demand that the Centre should clarify regarding the future of Christians living in Goa when CAA would be implemented, Sawaikar said that “six religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will come under CAA and CAA has nothing to do with Christians living in Goa, or those having Portuguese bilhetes”.
He said Congress is trying to mislead the people of the state over the issue. “We condemn this act of Congress,” he said.
BJP demanded that the government should take necessary action against those parties, organisations and elements who are involved in dividing the society and instigating the people.
Asked about Goans in Pakistan, Sawaikar, who is also the NRI commissioner, said that he has asked his office to find out about it. “There are Goans staying in Karachi and we are trying to establish contact with the Karachi Goan Association,” he said.
He said that some Goans who have stayed in Pakistan have some issues about their visa and passport. We are trying to get in touch with them, the NRI commissioner said.
