PANAJI: Two days after rape accused Ramchandra Yallapa escaped from Colvale Central Jail, an assistant jailor and two jail guards were suspended for negligence of duty on Thursday.
The jail authorities have initiated an inquiry to find out if any of the jail staff was involved in the undertrial’s escape.
Assistant jailor Paresh Desai, head guard Anant Gawas and jail guard Ulhas Talekar have been placed under suspension.

"An FIR will be lodged against the jail staff if their involvement in the escape of the rape accused is found. We are conducting a detailed inquiry to see if any of our staff abetted his escape,” a senior jail official said.
The officer said, the rape accused was illegally shifted to the mess section without consulting the seniors. This came to light only after he fled.
Yallapa is an undertrial for allegedly raping a British woman in 2018. On Tuesday morning, he moved out of his cell stating that he was visiting the jail dispensary.
