NEW DELHI: After the Foreign Service Institute was renamed after the late external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj last week, the government has now decided to rechristen national security think tank
Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses (
IDSA) after former defence minister
Manohar Parrikar.
The defence ministry on Tuesday said IDSA would now be called the Manohar Parrikar Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses to honour "the commitment and legacy" of the former Goa chief minister who died in March last year after a long battle with cancer.
An autonomous body established in 1965 to conduct research on national and international security, IDSA is funded by the defence ministry, with the minister chairing its executive committee. "As the defence minister from November 2014 to March 2017, Parrikar steered the MoD through the tough challenges like the Pathankot and Uri terror attacks and responded to these with exemplary boldness," said the government statement.
"During his tenure, India witnessed a series of decisions that enhanced the country's security capacities, boosted indigenous defence production and bettered the lives of ex-servicemen. He also initiated major military reforms with the objective of having a better teeth-to-tail ratio in the armed forces," it added.
