Drive to tackle single-use plastic ban violations

Drive to tackle single-use plastic ban violations
Gurgaon: The civic body is all set to kickstart an intensive campaign urging residents to ensure ban on single-use plastic. An MCG official said the campaign won’t be restricted to the ban alone, but the corporation will also come up with a proper mechanism for collection, segregation and processing of recyclable plastic.
The MCG official also said the step is being taken after the urban local bodies department directed all civic bodies in the state to run the campaign.
“We have already implemented the ban on single-use plastic in the city. The proposal has been prepared and will be finalised soon,” the civic body official said.
“As per the directions of the chief secretary, an intensive drive needs to be carried out to enforce the ban on single-use plastic along with seizures and imposition of penalty on the violators. It has also been directed that for the recyclable plastic waste, a proper mechanism for collection, segregation and processing of plastic waste based on the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 should be devised and implemented soon. The use of plastic waste in road construction should also be explored,” stated the communication sent by the urban local bodies department to the Gurgaon civic body.
The ULB department has also directed the civic bodies, including MCG, to start the intensive drive to ensure compliance of Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules (2016). “Following the directions, we will blacklist the builders if they are found flouting the C&D waste management rules. We are surveying the areas where construction and demolition waste is being illegally dumped. Since we cannot take action against the builders who flout the rule directly, we will identify the violators and write to the DTCP urging it to take a strict and appropriate action,” said Hariom Atrri, joint commissioner.
