GURUGRAM: A nine-year-old boy from Sirsa recently underwent a lifesaving robotic surgery at Fortis in Gurugram to get a 500g tumour removed from his left adrenal gland and was discharged from hospital last week. The tumour was causing high blood pressure. The boy was rushed to the hospital last month, amid the pandemic and the lockdown. The doctors had removed a 7x7 sqcm tumour.

Dr Anand Sinha, senior consultant, pediatric surgery and pediatric urology, FMRI said: “The patient was among the youngest in the country to undergo a robotic excision of Pheochromocytoma. The case was not only technically challenging but the current pandemic made matters complex. Due to this unprecedented emergency, many non-Covid illnesses lose priority and are neglected. Parents are also wary of contracting the virus during the course of the treatment. We ensured physical distancing to provide safest environment and at the same time ensured that he received state of art treatment.”
The boy suffered from severe headaches, weight loss and diarrhoea for the last two months, the doctors said. “Pheochromocytoma is a relatively uncommon tumour arising from the adrenal gland which results in excessive release of adrenaline and other similar hormones,” a doctor pointed out.
