Four suspected gang members, who were allegedly involved in “international cattle smuggling”, have been arrested in Dhubri town, about 250 km away from Guwahati, police said on Wednesday.

GUWAHATI: Four suspected gang members, who were allegedly involved in “international cattle smuggling”, have been arrested in Dhubri town, about 250 km away from Guwahati, police said on Wednesday.
They were arrested on Monday on charges of criminal conspiracy, theft and cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property under Section 120(b)/379/420 of the IPC.
All the arrested persons are from neighbouring Goalpara district.
Anand Mishra, Dhubri SP, said acting on a tip-off, police detained a car from Eidgrah Mart in Dhubri town on Monday and during the search, Rs 2.3 lakh was recovered from the possession of the accused.
Mishra said altogether eight suspected cattle smugglers was arrested since last week and investigation is on to break the nexus.
The four arrested persons are identified as Md Hasen Ali (32), Md Sahjamal (22) Md Nazrul Haque (28) and Md Monirul Haque of Goalpara district.
“While verifying their cellphones, we found several cattle smuggling videos. During a thorough questioning, they told us that they were carrying cattles by boat and used the river from Joleswar in Goalpara district to Bangladesh via Buraburi, Fokirganj in South Salmara and Pattamari,” Mishra told TOI.

Last week, two other alleged cattle smugglers were arrested in two separate operations from Gauripur and Golakganj under Dhubri district. Police also recovered 29 cattle heads and one vehicle from the suspected smugglers.
Mishra further said, “We are all out against not only cattle smugglers but any type of organised crime. All old cases are being opened, special teams being formed and continuous raids under senior officers, including myself, are being conducted. The government’s intention is very sharp and clear to have a ‘durnitimukto Axom’ (Corruption-free Assam) and we are sincerely working towards that cause.”
Even last month a local TV journalist, who has been reporting on illegal cattle smuggling in the district and the nexus behind it, was arrested for alleged cow smuggling in Dhubri. However, he has been granted bail.
Following the arrest of the journalist, former Dhubri SP Yuvraj was transferred and was replaced by Anand Mishra.
