BELAGAVI: The special investigation team probing the 2017 murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh will soon get in touch with Belagavi police after the latter found four abandoned country-made pistols at Waghawade village in the district last week.
The Karnataka SIT is looking for four country-made weapons used allegedly by the Gauri murder accused in a firearm-training exercise.
The Maharashtra SIT has so far recovered nine pistols, and one of them was reportedly used during training in the forests near Chikale village in Khanapur taluk of Belagavi district.
Waghawade villagers found the pistols at a trash site on February 8. Govind Fakira Patil, from the village, said civic workers chanced upon the weapons when they were loading trash on to a vehicle. They alerted Belagavi police.
Belagavi police commissioner BS Lokesh Kumar said the guns appear to be relatively old and ruled out any link with the Gauri case.
SIT chief MN Anuchet confirmed to TOI they were looking for four guns used in training by the Gauri murder accused, but added nothing could be conclusively said without ballistic analyses. "However, we will get in touch with Belagavi police soon," he added.
