HYDERABAD: A police constable who was on patrol duty as part of Covid-19 lockdown bandobust at Sanathnagar was allegedly assaulted by a group of youngsters on Saturday night. Due to the assault, the constable suffered a fracture and police launched a manhunt to nab the offenders.
Around 7 pm on Saturday, a team of Sanathnagar police, comprising sub-inspector (SI) Venkateshwarulu and three constables, went to Allapur for patrolling.
The team members split and went into different lanes to check whether people were moving in the streets. Constable Naveen Kumar, who went to Masjid Galli, noticed a group of youngsters in the lane and asked them to disperse.
“The youngsters picked up an argument with the constable, who was alone. The youth confronted him, arguing that they will continue to stand together near their houses and obstructed him,” Sanathanagar police said. During the argument, two men hit the constable with sticks and eight others punched him with their fists,” Sanathnagar SI D Paidi Naidu said.
Due to the assault, the constable suffered a fracture in his left leg and sustained internal injuries. Based on the complaint lodged by Naveen Kumar, Sanathnagar police registered a case under sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant while discharging his duty), 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 148 (rioting) r/w 149 of the IPC and Section 3 of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.
“The constable is out of danger. We have put up a picket at Allapur and a manhunt has been launched to nab the accused, including Irfan and Syed Fazil. All the accused were workers in small business establishments,” the SI said.
