HYDERABAD: To celebrate Ganesh festival in a novel way to protect the environment and increase green cover in the state, the Telangana government has decided to distribute 'Seed Ganesha’ across the state. The Seed Ganesha is prepared with organic mud or soil by mixing Need seeds inside the mud (Ganesh idol), which will be distributed to the people.
“The Seed within the Idol germinates and becomes a plant within five to seven days, the normal days of Ganesh festival in the houses.
After immersing the environmental friendly idol at home, the sapling can be planted on the premises of houses or neighbourhood, which will help to increase the green cover,” TRS MP Joginapally Santosh Kumar, who initiated the programme said. He has already taken up the Green India Challenge programme a couple of years ago to plant three crore plants in the state.
Seed Ganesha programme was launched by endowment, forest and environment minister A Indrakaran Reddy on Wednesday. The MP distributed the Ganesha idols to the cabinet ministers during the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Santosh Kumar announced that the idols would be prepared and distributed in the state in association with Go Rural India, an NGO. “People can celebrate Ganesh festival at their homes in the current pandemic situation. He said since the government is preferring medicine plants, Neem plants seeds are being inserted in the Ganesha idol,” Santosh Kumar said.
He said with the Seed Ganesha, three issues would be addressed. One is people can celebrate the festivals with environmental friendly idols, secondly people can also contribute to improving green cover in their areas, which finally helps increase greenery in the state. The last is water pollution can be reduced with the immersion at their homes.
The MP said they would try to distribute as many Seed Ganesha idols as possible. He said individuals and NGOs can also participate in making environmentally friendly idols.
