LUCKNOW: A 59-year-old woman riding pillion on her husband's scooter was crushed to death by an Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus in Chinhat on Sunday afternoon.
The accident, which also left the man grievously injured, affected traffic on the Faizabad Road stretch for around 30 minutes. Police have seized the abandoned bus and identified its driver who is on the run.
Preliminary investigation revealed that victim Rekha Srivastava, a resident of Vastu Khand in Gomtinagar, was on her way home with husband Anand Srivastava, a retired Allahabad Bank officer, after seeing a relative in Sector 10 of Indiranagar.
Around 1.45pm, when the couple reached near Ismailganj on Faizabad Road, the speeding UPSRTC bus hit the scooter from behind. While Anand who was the only one wearing a helmet crashed onto the left side of the road, Rekha was flung off her seat on impact and landed under the wheels of the bus.
Commuters dialled police on UP 112, but Rekha succumbed to her injuries on the spot. Anand was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
Ghazipur SHO Brijesh Singh said it appears the driver of the bus was at fault.
