LUCKNOW: While chief minister Yogi Adityanath kicked off the Ganga Yatra on Monday, the state urban development department has pushed in a slew of measures, including total ban on the use of polythene in local bodies through which the yatra would pass.
As per the directive issued by the department, Ganga Yatra would cover 21 local bodies in 26 districts. These would include three municipal corporations, 12 nagar palika parishad and six nagar panchayats.

The notification issued by principal secretary, urban development, Manoj Kumar Singh directed all local bodies to ensure the ban on use of plastics. Directives have been issued to ensure strict enforcement of ban on single use plastics, Singh told TOI.
“The idea is to ensure that no plastic flows into the Ganga during the yatra,” said a senior official in the urban development department. Ganga Yatra would be kicked off simultaneously from Gram Sabalgarh in Bijnor and village Kondhara Naubrar in Ballia, close to Bihar border.
The government had issued a notification in July 2018 banning use of polythene with thickness less than 50 micron. The ban on polythene comes after the department directed local bodies to be made open defecation free (ODF) during the course of yatra which would cover 205km every day. Local bodies have also been directed to put in place permanent/temporary measures to stop discharge of sewage and drain water into the Ganga. At the same time, management of solid waste will also have to be ensured till the conclusion of Ganga Yatra on January 31. Also, local bodies will have to identify suitable points where cultural programmes could be organised during the five days.
