LUCKNOW: Congress MLA from Rae Bareli (Sadar), Aditi Singh, stayed away from the party’s Bharat Bachao Rally in Delhi on Saturday. Instead, she preferred to review developmental work in her constituency, besides holding a media interaction at the local municipal office.
Though Aditi excused herself from the Ramlila Maidan event, citing personal commitments, her absence gave grist to rumours that she could switch sides before 2022 Vidhan Sabha elections.
“It hasn’t been a month since I got married. I just returned home in Rae Bareli for some personal commitments and rituals,” Aditi told TOI to a query on her absence from the rally in Delhi.
Aditi said she visited the Nagar Palika office in Rae Bareli to take stock of developmental work in her constituency. “I did not call any press conference as propagated by some rivals. It was a random interaction,” she stated. Aditi took the rebel path since October, when she defied party line to attend the special session of the UP Vidhan Sabha organised by the ruling BJP government to mark 150 years of Gandhi’s birth anniversary. While Congress announced it will boycott the session, Aditi went ahead to attend it. In the process, she also missed the shanti march led by party national general secretary. The next day, her pending request for more security was swiftly addressed.
A few days later, she met chief minister Yogi Adityanath in connection with pending development projects in Rae Bareli. In October, Aditi was nowhere to be seen in the three-day training session moderated by Priyanka Gandhi and other senior leaders of the party. Also, no one from the Gandhi family attended her wedding with Congress MLA from Nawashaher in New Delhi, a sign of strained ties. Four days after her wedding, Aditi was issued a showcause notice for deviating from party line and attending the UP assembly session.
