UP: Riding sans helmet to invite Rs 500 fine

Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday notified the amended Motor Vehicle Act which paves way for strict penalties on traffic violators. Principal secretary of transport department, Rajesh Singh, passed the order which authorises traffic policemen and transport department officials to collect increased fine amount from the violators.

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday notified the amended Motor Vehicle Act which paves way for strict penalties on traffic violators. Principal secretary of transport department, Rajesh Singh, passed the order which authorises traffic policemen and transport department officials to collect increased fine amount from the violators.
Two-wheeler riders who step out without helmet are liable to pay Rs 1000 as onspot challan henceforth and so will be the case for fourwheeler owners who do not use the seatbelt.

Using a vehicle which is yet to be registered or vehicle with expired registration will attract fine of Rs 5,000 under the revised act. Similarly use of mobile phone or any other handheld device while driving can result in monetarily loss of Rs 1000 on first offence and Rs 10,000 on the second one.
The minimum fine amount for most of the offences have been increased from Rs 100 to Rd 500 now. Though in some relief for motorists, documents uploaded on Digilocker will have to be treated as original documents by on-duty policemen. A mechanism to verify the documents saved on the online app has been already devised by the department. Officials said, that training of policemen is being conducted and within the next few days, the revised rules and fines will be imposed on the violators across UP.
