1.33 lakh litre illicit liquor seized, destroyed in 3 Punjab districts

Joint teams of the Punjab Police and excise departments on Monday destroyed 1.33 lakh litres of lahan (fermented material for distilling liquor) in Tarn Taran, Ferozepur and Fazilka districts while continuing its spree against illegal liquor.

CHANDIGARH/ FEROZEPUR: Joint teams of the Punjab Police and excise departments on Monday destroyed 1.33 lakh litres of lahan (fermented material for distilling liquor) in Tarn Taran, Ferozepur and Fazilka districts while continuing its spree against illegal liquor.
Around 1.25 lakh litres of lahan was recovered and destroyed in Ferozepur and Tarn Taran districts.
Around 6,500 litres lahan was recovered in village Mahalam in Jalalabad of Fazilka district, and 2,000 litres lahan in Ferozepur district.
A team of the excise department of Ferozepur and Tarn Taran districts on Monday morning seized 1.25 lakh litres of illicit liquor along with 26 tarpaulins and 10 drums from Harike wetland. A case has been registered against the bootlegger at Harike police station.
Giving details about the crackdown, deputy commissioner (excise) J S Brar said, during raids on a stretch at the confluence point of the Beas and the Satluj at Harike, 1,25 lakh litres of impounded illicit liquor was destroyed while a manufacturing unit (bhatti), 26 tarpaulins and 10 iron drums used in its manufacture and storage were confiscated.
He said the teams led by ETO (excise) Ferozepur Karambir Singh Mahla and accompanied by ETO (excise) Tarn Taran Manveer Butter, excise inspector Amanbir Singh and Ashok Kumar began the search operations early in the day in the presence of range officer of Harike bird sanctuary, Kanwarjit Singh. He said the department has booked the bootlegger, who managed to flee after getting the wind of the raids.
Brar said the illegal liquor trade would be dealt with heavy hand and those indulging in it would not be spared at any cost.
In another raid at Mahalam village in Jalalabad, the joint team seized 70 bottles of illicit liquor along with 6,500 litres of lahan. In the third raid at Dhani Dariya Wali village, the joint team seized 2,000 litres of lahan. Subsequently, the team destroyed the lahan in the fields and started the process of registering the case.
