BJP, Cong councillors meet mayor, complain against choked sewers
Ludhiana: The officials of the Ludhiana municipal corporation have failed to address the basic problem of water contamination and sewerage choking. On the other hand, the officials claim to develop the industrial town into smart city.
On Tuesday, councillors of BJP and Congress complained the mayor, Balkar Sandhu, about these problems in their respective wards and also held officials responsible for the same.

Congress councillor from ward number 3 Pallavi Vinayak even threatened to sit on protest at the MC office as the officials have failed to solve the problem of sewerage overflow in some of the localities from the past 2 years.
While describing the problem, Pallavi Vinayak told the mayor that in areas like Kali Sadak, Vivek Vihar etc the roads remained flooded with sewerage water almost every day and since the day she has become councillor, people come with similar complaints.
She said she had called up the officials concerned several times and showed them the area, but they had failed in solving the problem.
She threatened to sit on protest against the government in case the problem was not resolved in the next two-three days.
The mayor, however, pacified her and assured her that the problem would be resolved. He gave two-day time to the officials concerned for solving the problem.
The mayor would visit the area on Friday. He said he would take suitable action against the officials in case they did not solve the issue.

Meanwhile, BJP councillor from ward number 84 Surinder Atwal complained that there was problem of water contamination in localities of his ward and despite several complaints to the staff concerned, there was no relief to the public.
He said he had requested several times to change staff in the ward as there were only two sewer men and they were injured and unable to work. Atwal also complained that there were chances of spreading of disease in case the authorities did not act in time.
Another BJP councillor from ward number 85 Sunita Sharma also complained about choking of sewer in the locality. She said she had also protested against no action over her complaints outside Daresi office, but even then, the problem was not resolved.
She said the public had also started staging protest in the ward against the problem.
The mayor assured to resolve the issues shortly and also instructed the staff to take immediate action over such complaints.
He told the councillors that new sewer cleaning machines had arrived, but they were fulfilling the document formalities before distributing the machines in the zones.
He said once machines would start functioning, sewer men would need not to enter the sewerage manholes for cleaning.
