PATIALA: A fresh case for hurting religious sentiments has been registered against director-choreographer Farah Khan, Bollywood actor Raveena Tandon and comedian Bharti Singh. Ropar police registered the FIR on Friday late evening. This is the fourth case registered in Punjab against the three for hurting sentiments of the Christian community.
In Ropar, a complaint against the celebrities was submitted on December 28, by Bishop Charan Masih, national president of All India Christian Welfare Front.
Earlier, Amritsar police had booked them on a complaint filed by Sonu Jafar, the president of the Christian Front of Ajnala Block. He had submitted video footage of the show aired on the eve of Christmas, where the celebrities allegedly made fun of the word “hallelujah”.
Ropar SSP Swapan Sharma said, “Before us, similar cases have been already registered by police in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Ferozepur under sections 295-A of the IPC against the celebrities.”
Charan said, “In the TV show, the celebrities even recognized the word ‘hallelujah’ as referred to in the ‘Bible’, but even then they made fun of it. In Ropar, there are around 10,000 Christians. On December 28, we held a protest march burnt the effigies of Raveena Tandon, Farah Khan and Bharti Singh and submitted a complaint to Ropar SSP. The case was registered on Friday evening by the police after thorough verification.”
When asked about the full apology already tendered by the celebrities in the matter, he said, “The Roman Catholic group did not even protest against these celebrities. Hence they do not have any moral right to pardon them. Only the Protestant group had raised its voice. The action in accordance with the law should be taken.”
On December 30, the members of the Christian community in Patiala also took out a protest march against the celebrities and demanded stringent action against them in accordance with the laws. They also submitted a memorandum in this regard to Patiala MP Preneet Kaur.
