Opium, pills and illicit liquor continue to pose challenge for Patiala police

The crime data from the previous two years have revealed that opium, pills and illicit liquor continue to pose a major challenge for the Patiala police. During the last two years, the cops have recovered around 70kg of opium and over 10 lakh pills while fighting drug menace. Besides, illicit liquor also continues to be a cause of concern for the law enforcers in the district.

PATIALA: The crime data from the previous two years have revealed that opium, pills and illicit liquor continue to pose a major challenge for the Patiala police. During the last two years, the cops have recovered around 70kg of opium and over 10 lakh pills while fighting drug menace. Besides, illicit liquor also continues to be a cause of concern for the law enforcers in the district.
Going by the records, the district police in the last two years have registered 1,121 cases under the NDPS Act and 1,364 people were arrested.
The cops recovered a total of 6,980kg of opium, 4,595kg of poppy husk, 2.5kg of sulphur and smack, 5kgs of charas, 36,000 capsules and 3,200 injections that are used by the addicts for intoxication.
However, the main area of concern continued to be intoxicating pills as over 10 lakh were recovered in the last two years suggesting that the drug peddlers had been trying to keep these pills in high circulation. Besides, the district police also recovered huge quantities of illicit liquor including country made and Indian made foreign liquor in the last 2 years.
The crime data also revealed that a total of 80 persons involved with 18 criminal gangs who were active in the region were busted leading to solving of 121 cases.
The district police also arrested five persons who were involved with extremist groups that wanted to destabilize the law and order situation of the state leading to the recovery of hand grenades and other sophisticated weapons. A total of 158 cases of robberies were also solved in which assets and cash worth over Rs 1.5 crore was recovered.
The cops also managed to trace 29 blind murder cases and busted a spurious milk manufacturing unit. At least three terrorist modules backed by the ISI and a racket involving fraudulent registration of vehicles and transport permit were also busted.
A gang involved in cyber crimes operating from Jamtara in Jharkhand was also busted by the Patiala police.
Patiala superintendent of police MS Sidhu said recognising the extraordinary efforts being put in by the Patiala police, the state government gave cash rewards of over Rs 4.2 lakh and promoted 84 cops working with the Patiala police in the last two years. Besides, 135 DGP commendation discs and 7,894 commendation certificates were also received by the cops in the last two years.
