Covid-19 scare in Punjab: Universities cancel major events

In the view of Covid-19 threat, the Punjabi University at Patiala has postponed its convocation, which was scheduled for March 17. Similarly, the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) here has also postponed all moots, seminars, conferences and workshops scheduled for March and April, till further orders. Internal academic activities at both the institutions shall continue as per the schedule.

PATIALA: In the view of Covid-19 threat, the Punjabi University at Patiala has postponed its convocation, which was scheduled for March 17. Similarly, the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) here has also postponed all moots, seminars, conferences and workshops scheduled for March and April, till further orders. Internal academic activities at both the institutions shall continue as per the schedule.

Around 700 alumni were supposed to take part in the convocation.
The Punjabi University had also postponed its project under ‘Global Initiative for Academic Networks’ (GIAN) as the visit of a professor from Spain was cancelled. Prof Yolanda Pico from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Vatencia, Spain was earlier supposed to visit at Patiala in April this year but now the university authorities are considering to start the project in October. The university had joined the League of Institutions under GIAN programme in 2019.

Punjabi University registrar Manjit Singh Nijjar said, “The convocation has been postponed and all the department heads have been instructed to inform students about the coronavirus threat. There are no major conferences planned either.”
Some RGNUL students have recently requested the administration to postpone their exams, stating that a large number of students come from across the country.
“The contact between the students increases during exams and thus we requested the administration to postpone the exams but they refused. The national law universities in Odisha, where no positive case has been reported so far, deferred the exams as have Jodhpur, Kerala and other states,” a student claimed.
