PATIALA: A group of Mardahedi villagers in Patiala on Thursday staged a protest against the city police and alleged that the cops had wrongly booked a local who was assaulted by his neighbours one-and-a-half-year ago.
The protesters claimed that the investigating officer of the case took bribe from the real assaulters and booked the victim under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The protesters said they had an audio recording in which the cop was offering Rs 10,000 to a doctor to show that the alleged assaulters had faced grievous injuries.
"Even after being charged with bribe, the department has failed to take any action against the erring cop. In October 2018, a minor girl told her father that her 25-year-old married neighbour had molested her. Following this, the girl's parents discussed the matter with the family members of the accused molester. After a few hours, the accused and his family members went to the girl's house and assaulted her family. The video was recorded and submitted to the police," the protesters said.
"This case is a clear example of police misusing power," said district president of National Balmiki Sabha India, Amrik Singh. He added that he had also written to Patiala SSP thrice, but all in vain.
