LUDHIANA: A plucky elderly woman helped nab three burglars, who broke into her house in Central Town, near Lodhi Club Road, Monday midnight.
In his police complaint, 60-year-old Manjeet Kaur’s son-in-law Pritpal Singh said, “My father-in-law — Paramjit Singh, 62, a badminton coach — had gone to Sonipat two days ago. His wife Manjeet was alone at home.
At midnight, she called me up, saying someone has entered her house and she could hear loud noises.”
Pritpal, a resident of Barewal village, immediately left for her house. “On the way, I called up my friends in Central Town. I reached my mother-in-law’s house in 15 minutes and woke up some of her neighbours, apprising them of the situation. Then I, along with them, entered her house and found three thieves ransacking it,” he added.
The burglars were in one room. “With screwdriver and sharp-edged weapons, they had broken open the almirah locks and stolen Rs 20,000 and gold jewellery. They had tried to open the room where my mother-in-law was sleeping, but could not as she had bolted it from inside,” Pritpal said.
Pritpal, along with others, nabbed the trio and called up the police.
The burglars had gained entry by scaling a boundary wall. “With the help of trees planted outside the boundary wall, the thieves reached the first-floor balcony. They then broke open a door with screwdrivers. The wall bears their footprints,” he added.
Lalton police post in-charge assistant sub-inspector Om Prakash said, “The thieves are in police custody. An FIR will be lodged after verifying the complaint.”
