Karnataka: Coastal districts record 414 new cases, Udupi takes a break from Covid-19 deaths

With the Grim Reaper taking a break in Udupi on Sunday while harvesting six souls in Dakshina Kannada, the two coastal districts recorded 414 new Covid-19 cases with Udupi accounting for 282 and Dakshina Kannada(DK) district 132.

MANGALURU/UDUPI: With the Grim Reaper taking a break in Udupi on Sunday while harvesting six souls in Dakshina Kannada, the two coastal districts recorded 414 new Covid-19 cases with Udupi accounting for 282 and Dakshina Kannada(DK) district 132. Tilting the scales ever so slightly was the data discharge of patients that saw 292 people, including 195 get discharged in DK district to leave it with 3,305 and Udupi with 2,697 active cases, respectively.
A majority of the 282 cases in Udupi were primary contacts at 132 cases.
People with influenza like illness (ILI) accounted for 69 cases, source of infection in 66 patients is being investigated, Udupi deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha, said. The district also recorded six Covid-19 cases each in people with severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) and among domestic travellers and three cases were reported in people with international travel history.
Incidentally, most of the patients in Udupi district were asymptomatic at 205 including 106 females and the rest symptomatic including 48 males. Udupi taluk accounted for 152 of the new cases on the day, Kundapur 86, Karkala 43 and one case was reported in a patient from outside the district. Total positive cases in the district as on date has tested 44,824 samples, rose to 6,201 with 37,325 samples turning out to be negative, Jagadeesha noted.
The six Covid-19 related deaths in DK including two each in Mangaluru and Bantwal taluks, one each in Sullia and from outside DK were reported in people who had comorbidities, noted Dr K V Rajendra, deputy commissioner. This took the death toll in DK to 220. Sixty-eight of the new cases were people who had ILI, 21 were primary contacts, source of infection in 32 is being investigated and 11 people with SARI tested positive, Dr Rajendra said.
The total positive cases in DK as on date stood at 7,207 and numbers of those discharged was 3,682 leaving authorities here handling 3305 active cases. Mangaluru taluk accounts for bulk of the 7207 cases at 5023 including 81 on the day, Bantwal 689 (22), Belthangady 370 (4), Puttur 351 (6), Moodabidri 98, Sullia 93 (3), Mulki 91 and Kadaba 55. Sixteen cases were reported in people from outside DK, taking their total number to 437, DC said.
