AMROHA: A pedestrian, who “in all likelihood” got mowed down while crossing Delhi-Lucknow highway in UP’s Amroha, was reduced to bones as hundreds of vehicles passed over his body taking away bit-by-bit of his flesh in their tyres for over 12 hours, without noticing him.
According to sources, there were several police response vehicles in the region around National Highway 9, but none noticed the body or got any information about it lying in the middle of road.

The man allegedly met with the accident on Saturday evening, soon after the darkness fell, and police was informed about it on Sunday morning. In between, hundreds of heavy and small vehicles continued to trample on it. Police had to scrape off the remains of the body from the road. It was only in the post-mortem room that doctors and policemen identified the gender of the body with his clothes.
“There is still no clue about who he was,” a police officer said, adding that the incident took place close to Shahwazpur gate in Amroha’s Gajraula area.
Gajraula’s station house officer (SHO) Jaiveer Singh said, “The accident might have taken place during the wee hours of Sunday. The body was crushed badly. It was very difficult for us to lift the pieces. It has been sent to district hospital for autopsy. We will preserve its DNA for identification.”
The incident brought to the fore the apathy of the passersby, and also that of local police. There were several ‘Dial 100’ cars patrolling on the stretch of NH-9, but none got the information about the body.
On June 5, 2016, a man was crushed to death on NH-74 and hundreds of vehicles passed over him in a similar manner. He is yet to be identified.
