MUMBAI: A Kenyan lawmaker, in India on an official trip, was found dead in his hotel room in Mulund on Wednesday. Cyrus Omondi (40) was a first-time ward representative at Kiambu county assembly in central Kenya. He was elected on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party ticket. Omondi was a member of county assembly from Kahawa Wendani.
Kenyan media reports said Omondi was in India for a workshop with colleagues from the education committee. But Mulund police said he was also part of a representative committee for an international martial arts tournament for youngsters. “The tournament was on February 1 and 2. Committee members arrived in Mumbai on different dates. Omondi arrived on February 6 and checked into Trimurti hotel in Mulund,” said a police officer.
Tournament participants left for Kenya on February 10. “On Tuesday night, Omondi went to his room after dinner and did not emerge the entire day on Wednesday. Indian guides who had been meeting him throughout his stay contacted the hotel manager late in the evening. When Omondi’s room was opened with duplicate keys, he was found sprawled on the ground. Police were informed and he was taken to M T Agarwal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Kenyan Embassy was immediately informed. The body was moved to Rajawadi Hospital morgue. Police have recorded an accidental death case.
Kenyan media reports said Omondi worked as a mechanic in Kahawa before his rise in politics. He clinched the Kahawa Wendani seat in 2017 after failing in 2013.
