MUMBAI: After relaxing the testing criteria for Covid-19 patients, the BMC has reiterated its home isolation rules will exclude vulnerable Covid-positive patients who have cancer, HIV or have undergone transplant.
People with mild symptoms, along with those who are pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic, will be allowed home isolation upon their self-declaration. The BMC’s latest directive, says a civic medical officer, will decide if patients should be classified as mild Covid, pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic.
They must have round-the-clock caregivers who will be in contact with hospitals in an emergency.
The caregiver and all close contacts of such patients should take hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis medicine. The state government’s directive came on Tuesday, based on the union health ministry’s revised guideline issued on July 2.
In Mumbai, several mildly ill patients were shifted to institutional quarantine because they had small homes. An assistant municipal commissioner said, “We allow home isolation for asymptomatic Covid-19 positive patients if they have big houses and separate toilets. We shift mild symptomatic patients to a hospital or our facilities as they can develop symptoms at any time.” A patient in home isolation will be “discharged” after 10 days of symptoms’ onset and absence of fever in the last three days.
