MYSURU: A school teacher died and 12 other passengers were injured after a Kerala-bound private bus in which they were travelling overturned in
Hunsur town on Friday midnight.
The deceased is Shareena, 29, a native of Nagpur in Maharastra, who was working as a teacher at a school in Bengaluru. She was travelling to Thalassery in Kerala for ayurvedic treatment.
The driver of the sleeper coach belonging to Kallada Tours and Travels lost control of the speeding bus while trying to avoid another bus coming from the opposite side and hit an electric pole.
Due to the impact, the bus overturned, resulting in serious injuries to Shareena and other 15 passengers. There were around 30 passengers in the bus. Shareena,, whose legs were severed in the
accident succumbed to injuries on the way to KR Hospital in Mysuru.
Of the injured passengers, Kareena and Sri Raghu were admitted to Bhanavi Hospital while Siraj, Anjana, Lhogin, Farhad, Swetha, Bhavisha, Amrutha, Akshay, Santhosh, Shiny, Shivoth, and bus cleaner Ansaf, were taken to KR Hospital. Bus driver Sudhin managed to escape with minor injuries.
Police said the passengers were fast asleep when the accident took place near the old, narrow bridge across Lakshman Teerta River.
The villagers, who heard the cries of shocked passengers, rushed to their help and informed police as well the electricity department to disconnect power.
Meanwhile, autorickshaw drivers, who had been waiting for passengers near the rural bus stand, rushed to the help of the injured and shifted them to the hospital. Police using cranes lifted the bus and also arranged transport for uninjured passengers to travel to Kerala.
On hearing the tragic news, Shareena’s husband, working as a store manager in a hospital in Bengaluru, rushed to KR Hospital in Mysuru to take the body. Hunsur Town police are investigating the case.
