NAGPUR: Sadar police on Wednesday detained a woman lab assistant at the Government Polytechnic (GP) college, Sadar, for around three hours, after she allegedly threw liquid ammonia on the head of the department (HOD) of IT department. The presence of mind of the HOD saved her, as when the liquid ammonia was thrown at her, she used her dupatta as a shield, preventing any of the liquid from reaching her.
Senior PI of Sadar police station Mahesh Bansode said, “The victim HOD has refused to press charges, so we are not filing any case at this moment.
We have recorded the statement of the alleged attacker and let her go.”
In-charge principal Deepak Kulkarni confirmed the incident. “Currently I cannot take any action against the attacker as she was appointed by the joint director. I will be submitting a report about the incident to the joint director. The attacker has not denied the attack in front of our Women Grievance Cell, and also submitted a written reply in which she admitted the attack.”
Sources said Shalu (name changed) used to work as a lab assistant for Deepali (name changed), HOD at IT department, from September till December. Deepali and Shalu were not getting along as the latter used to take unsanctioned leaves. So, Deepali had given a written complaint to Kulkarni.
“After receiving the complaint, I shifted Shalu to the chemistry department, to keep her away from Deepali. We had also held back Shalu’s payment for December as she had not attended college for even one day, without submitting any leave application,” added Kulkarni.
It is learnt that Shalu had on Tuesday submitted a complaint to Kulkarni against Deepali for alleged harassment. Kulkarni had sent the complaint to the Women’s Grievance Cell of the college.

On Wednesday, Deepali was sitting in her cabin when Shalu approached her carrying liquid ammonia in a beaker and threw it at her. Deepali used her dupatta to shield herself. Other teachers rushed to the spot after Deepali raised an alarm. Shalu was taken to a different room.
“Members of our Women’s Grievance Cell also inquired with Shalu, in whose purse they also found a knife,” added Kulkarni.
Soon, Sadar police led by PI Bansode were summoned to the spot and detained Shalu. The cops waited till evening but since Deepali did not show up to file a complaint, they let Shalu go after recording her statement.
