Plays depict thoughts of Savarkar, ills of society
Artistes perform in ‘Kaumarya’ play held at Scientific Society Hall, Laxmi Nagar, on Thursday
Nagpur: Two plays were staged on the opening day of the 59th Maharashtra Hindi Natya Competition, organized by Sanskrutik Karya Shanchalalay, at Scientific Society Hall, Laxmi Nagar, on Thursday.
‘What about Savarkar’, a play written and directed by Pravin Khapre, highlighted the efforts made by the great freedom fighter to bring about a change in the society.
Savarkar was a visionary and staunch believer in scientific approach. The drama says his positive approach towards solving the ills afflicting the society will go a long way even in today’s context. The play was staged by Udaan Ek Zep.
It depicted how various ideologies originated in the country and Savarkar’s contribution to the country. The drama depicted how his thoughts were distorted by certain elements. Scenes from the life of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Gautam Buddha, and others were also effectively showcased.
Shri Natraj Shaikshanik, Sanskrutik, Krida Sanstha staged ‘Kaumarya’, a play written by Salim Sheikh and directed by Harshad Sasane. It highlighted the life of the people of Kanjarbhat community. It showed that side of the society which is conservative.
The story revolved around a young girl, Surmi, who is forced to marry Suraj due to a promise given by her father. His father was drunk when he promised to his friend that they would get their kids married.
People of this community follow a tradition to check blood as a sign of originality after the marriage. Surmi fails the test and is abandoned by the society. Her husband divorces her and even her parents refuse to accept her.

Surmi refuses to live with the feeling of betrayal by her family. She raises her voice against injustice meted out to her, but the society does not accept her.
The play delivered a message that people should not blindly follow the traditions as there could be some black spots. It forces the society to question the practices harmful to the society.
Various plays will be staged at Scientific Society Hall till March 3.
