NAVI MUMBAI: Gusty winds accompanied with heavy rain all through Wednesday wreaked havoc at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).
As many as three cranes collapsed and fell in the harbour. However, nobody was injured in the incident, said JNPT officials adding that port operation has been halted, owing to bad weather.
Meanwhile, a 25-feet-long fibre rooftop and a supporting metal structure of DY Patil Stadium in Nerul came crashing down due to strong winds.

According to a spokesperson from JNPT, “Owing to inclement weather and gusty wind, there has been damage to three cranes of JNPT terminal. However, there have been no injuries and everyone is safe. Exact damage is being ascertained.” The incident happened in the afternoon when no one was in proximity to the cranes.
JNPT marketing manager Ambika Singh told TOI, “The operation in the port was suspended well before the incident due to bad weather. We will have to review the situation once the weather condition becomes normal. We always stop operation when there’s rough weather.”
