Teenager, mother killed in crash on Eastern Peripheral Expressway
The Tiago split into two parts due to the impact of the accident
Greater Noida: This year’s Raksha Bandhan festival ended in tragedy for a family in Greater Noida, after a horrific crash on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) near Dadri on Monday afternoon split their Tiago into two parts from the middle, claiming the lives of a mother-daughter duo and injuring two others seriously. The accident stalled traffic on the high-speed corridor for over an hour.

The accident occurred around 5pm when 36-year-old Shashi Bhati, her daughter Bhoomi (14), her son Himanshu (16) and nephew Mohit (22), residents of Dadri’s Bodaki village, were returning home from Ghaziabad. Shashi had gone to her parent’s home in Morta to tie rakhis to her brothers.
Police suspect their car had rammed a heavy vehicle, possibly a truck, at a high speed on the expressway. Such was the impact of the crash that the mother-daughter duo who was seated at the back died on the spot, and it took cops quite an effort to pull out the bodies as the car had got mangled. Himanshu and Mohit are currently battling for their lives at a private hospital.
Dadri SHO Dinesh Singh told TOI that the exact reason behind the crash was unclear, but it seemed that the driver lost control over the car while trying to overtake the heavy vehicle, leading to the accident. The other vehicle could not be identified as it sped away after the crash.
“Shashi had gone to tie rakhis to her brothers. When the family was returning from Ghaziabad via the EPE, it seems that Mohit who was possibly driving the car tried to overtake the heavy vehicle travelling in front of their Tiago but failed. It is possible that the vehicle had tried to take a detour, resulting in the horrific crash,” Singh said. “The injured have been admitted to a private hospital in Greater Noida, where their condition is serious.”

The accident resulted in traffic getting affected on the EPE for about an hour till the car was removed from the spot. Since the EPE does not have cameras installed between its stretches, the accident could not be captured on CCTVs. However, police are relying on the CCTV cameras installed at the toll plazas and have informed the toll officials to scan the footage for any damaged heavy vehicle.
ACP Satish Kumar said an FIR will be lodged in the case against the unknown vehicle driver once the family members hand over a written complaint to the police.
