BGH suffers Covid jolt as medicos contract virus
Bokaro: After a fresh batch of staff, including the director of Bokaro General Hospital (BGH), the in-charge of the Covid ward, eight doctors and surgeons tested positive for the virus, the hospital is finding it difficult to manage the patient load. Currently, 22 Covid patients and 176 non-Covid patients are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Earlier, a senior administrative officer, a nurse and a technician tested positive for the virus, taking the total number of infected frontline health professionals to 14 in the hospital.
Of the 14, three have recovered while the rest have been quarantined.
Chief of communication, BSL, Manikant Dhan said, “Covid-19 is posing a challenge for one and all and BGH is no different. We are keeping a close watch on the developments and the situation is being reviewed periodically. Some of the routine health services have been scaled down at the moment in order to manage Covid cases. We are trying to do the best within the available resources as senior doctors have also tested positive.”
A senior doctor said, “We are running the hospital with mutual help among departments. It is a very tough time for us as four of the seven surgeons have tested positive. Four from the medicine department reported positive and two are DNB doctors. The worst hit departments are gynaecology, medicine and surgery.”
There are 135 regular doctors in BGH, besides DNB doctors. A good number of doctors, nurses and health workers have been deployed exclusively at the Covid Ward, Covid CCU and the Covid Suspected Ward.
Though the hospital management is struggling to manage, senior doctors are hopeful that the district administration will provide a backup of private medical practitioners or government doctors in this crisis.
Chas sub-divisional officer (SDO) Shashi Prakash Singh said, “We are assessing the need of BGH and will work out accordingly.” Singh also had a meeting with civil surgeon Dr A K Pathak in this regard. The district till Tuesday recorded 488 cases of which 162 are still active and two have died.
