SURAT: An eight-year-old boy had a miraculous escape after he accidentally fell into a 30-foot-deep manhole at Pandal Mohalla in Nanavat locality of the city on Friday afternoon.
Mohammed Abdul Ghani (8), a resident of Pandal Mohalla in Nanavat, was playing with other kids on Friday afternoon when he accidentally fell into the manhole. The other children sounded an alert by shouting for help.
The residents rushed to the spot and tried to rescue the boy, but to no avail.
Then a team from fire and emergency service of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) immediately rushed to the spot after getting a rescue call from a resident. It was within 15 minutes that the fire fighters were able to rescue the boy.
Fire officer Dipak Makhijani told TOI: “Luckily the manhole pit was non-operational and it was empty. The stone layer covering the manhole was broken when the victim had stepped on it. A man was already inside the manhole to rescue the boy. However, we used the rescue ropes to pull both the man and the child from inside.”
Makhijani added, “When we took the boy from the manhole he was unconscious. He had received minor injuries. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment where his condition has now returned to normalcy.”
