Another wet day, Mumbai rain to soon exceed 1,000mm mark

MUMBAI:As intense spells of rain continued to lash several parts of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai on Tuesday post noon, the season’s total rainfall inched closer to the 1,000mm-mark.
In the 12-hour period ending 8.30pm, the Colaba observatory recorded 50.6mm of rainfall and the Santacruz station, 46.4mm. Since June 1, the total rainfall recorded so far by the IMD Colaba observatory is 992mm, and the Santacruz centre, 972.8mm.The cumulative rain received during the same period last year was 715.1 mm and 1,163.1 mm, respectively.

Weathermen said Mumbai, Thane and Palghar may receive light to moderate rain on Wednesday.
On Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a ‘green’ alert (light to moderate rain) for the city. But by Tuesday afternoon, it was upgraded to a ‘yellow’ alert (heavy rain at isolated places). Weathermen attributed Tuesday’s intense rain spells to the influence of a “well-marked low pressure system near Saurashtra-Kutch.”
“Intense clouds were seen in Mumbai and around from the radar and satellite images. South Konkan too was covered with clouds. Hence, intense rainfall… was expected on Tuesday,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director-general (western region), India Meteorological Department.
On Tuesday, as a high tide of 4.54 metres at 1.46pm coincided with the heavy showers, several areas got waterlogged. Strong, gusty winds that accompanied the rain led to tree and branch crashes. No one was injured in these incidents.
The areas that reported maximum rain in Mumbai were Mulund at 87.37mm, Borivli 75.41mm, Kandivli 67.79mm and Goregaon 60.16mm. Naupada in Thane recorded 97mm. In Navi Mumbai, maximum rain was recorded at Nerul 91.2mm, Belapur 85.9mm and Ghansoli 83.7mm.
Meanwhile, the total water stocks in the catchment area lakes increased further on Tuesday crossing 2 lakh million litres or 14% of the total required stocks from 1.6 lakh million litres the previous day. On July 7, 2019, the total water stocks stood at 3.03 lakh million litres.
The total required stocks is 14.47 lakh million litres by October 1 for the city to go without a water cut for the rest of the year. The BMC currently supplies 3,420 million litres of water to Mumbai every day.
