KALYAN: Timely intervention by a social worker and police on Thursday led to the cancellation of the marriage of a minor girl to be held next month in Kalyan.
The Kalyan-based family had fixed marriage of a 17-year-old girl on March 3 to which girl was opposing as she wanted to study further. Police said upset with the decision of parents, girl informed about her wedding plan to some friends and they contacted a social worker Bhavna Suralke for help.

Suralke said, "Upon learning that girl is minor and she is not ready for marriage. I am approach to local Kolsewadi police who called parents of girl".
Suralke said, "The family conducted girl's engagement last month and had fixed her wedding on March 3 and even had got printed wedding cards for distribution".
The girl Radhika (name changed to prevent identity as the girl is minor) hails from Kalyan East have completed her 17 years and 9 months. Sahurao Salve, senior police inspector of Kolsewadi police station said, "After learning about the incident we called girl's parent who has given us in written to cancel the wedding and said they will get married girl once she will complete her 18 age".
"Upon asked for early wedding, father of the girl said that as his mother (Grandmother of girl) is unwell they wanted to get married daughter before mother's death". Said Madhukar Bhonge, police inspector of Kolsewadi police station.
