THANE: In less than a week, two migratory Bridled Tern birds were spotted in Thane district. While the first one was spotted in Thane city, the second sighting was in Navi Mumbai. However, while one of them survived, the other breathed its last on Saturday.
Earlier this week, the migratory bird was found lying exhausted in a residential area in Wagbil. The bird was rescued and after proper care, it recovered.
Meanwhile, on Friday, another Bridled Tern was rescued by a resident at Seawoods in Navi Mumbai.
The resident, Riya Malve, said that she had gone for a walk in the evening when she found some crows hovering around the bird which was unable to fly. She then took it home and informed the Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) on Saturday. The staff took the bird which was already weak and dehydrated. Despite treating it, the bird died.
"It was weak and it would have died due to exhaustion and stress. But we will be able to ascertain the exact cause only once we get the post-mortem report. We have sent the bird to the Bombay veterinary college for a post-mortem," said Aditya Patil, president WWA.
Meanwhile, the one that survived will be released into the wild soon, Patil said.
Experts from the Bombay Natural History Society said that the bird would have come into the city due to the strong winds that the city witnessed in the last few days. "There is no way we can know the exact city or country from where these birds came," said Rahul Khot, assistant director of BNHS.
