THANE: A 3 feet long,
common Indian monitor lizard, was found in the
toilet of a house which was locked for almost two months, in a chawl in Kandivali on Friday.
The lizard had broken the plastic exhaust fan to enter the toilet and was confined inside as the washroom was locked from the outside. The owners were shocked to see such a big lizard inside.
Avinash Gawade, an IT professional who now lives in Dahisar, said he had gone to his house at Gawade Compound in Kandivli on Friday morning as it had been locked for the last two months.
“When I pushed open the toilet door, I saw the monitor lizard in there. The plastic exhaust fan lay on the floor of the toilet, broken,” he said, adding that the lizard had used the opening to enter. “Luckily, the door to the toilet was latched and so it could not crawl into the other rooms.”
He immediately called the NGO Spreading awareness on reptiles and rehabilitation programme (SARRP), who confirmed that the caller sounded tense.
“Our rescuer Amit Sadke reached the location and saw that it was a sub adult
monitor lizard, which was in the sedentary position inside the commode. The
reptile was rescued and taken to veterinarian for examination. It is likely that due to the heavy rains the cold blooded animal was looking for a dry and warm place and hence entered the toilet,” said Chitra Pednekar, member of SARRP.
The veterinarian Dr. Sunetra Wadke who checked the reptile stated that it was healthy and hence was released in the wild.
