THANE: An alleged attempt by nine inmates of Thane jail to flee the prison was foiled after a jail officer found a ladder that they were putting together to escape. The ladder, 25 ft high, had been made using iron pipes bound with elastic pulled out from undergarments. The iron pipes were those through which water flows into toilets inside the prison. The police said they suspect the prisoners were at work for a few weeks.

The police said four prison officials examined the premises on Friday after getting a tipoff about the escape plan. They found the ladder kept above a toilet being constructed behind a barrack. The officials questioned a few inmates and one of them confessed to his involvement. He led the officials to the others, said the police.
