Kerala: Covid cases hit a new high as 1,420 people found infected

Kerala recorded 1,420 new Covid-19 cases, the highest ever since the pandemic outbreak, on Saturday. The number of patients who recovered from the viral disease also proved a record at1,715 on the day.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala recorded 1,420 new Covid-19 cases, the highest ever since the pandemic outbreak, on Saturday. The number of patients who recovered from the viral disease also proved a record at1,715 on the day.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in his daily news conference that four more Covid-related deaths were reported on Saturday. Those who succumbed to the disease are Vinod Kumar, 41, of Uppala in Kasaragod; Suleikha, 63, of Vellikkulangara in Kozhikode; Chellappan, 60, of Kilkolur in Kollam; and Purushothaman, 84, of Panavally in Alappuzha.
The total number of Covid cases through local transmission was 1,216 in the state on Saturday. Among the positive cases, source of transmission in 92 cases are yet to be identified. Among the 1,420 new cases, 60 were from abroad, 108 from other states and 30 were health workers, said the CM.
The number of Covid-19 positive cases continued to be on the rise in Thiruvananthapuram as the district reported 485 cases on Saturday alone, the highest in the state.
In Kozhikode, a total of 173 people contracted Covid-19 on Saturday, out of which 143 cases are through local transmission. District medical officer Dr V Jayasree said that the sources of nine cases were not yet identified. Six of them have come from abroad and 15 from other states.
Meanwhile, Alappuzha district on Saturday reported 168 Covid-19 cases.
A total of 134 patients contracted the disease through local transmission. Apart from that, three health workers, 18 people who arrived from other states and 13 people who landed from foreign countries also tested positive for the disease. Alappuzha district collector A Alexander has declared wards 6 and 10 in Aroor and ward 5 in Panavally as containment zones.

As many as 114 people turned positive for Covid-19 in Malappuram, out of which 100 are cases of local transmission. Among other districts, Ernakulam recorded 101cases while Kasaragod recorded 73, Thrissur 64 and Kannur 57 cases. As many as 41 cases were reported from Kollam and Idukki also reported 41 cases. Palakkad recorded 39 cases, while Pathanamthitta reported 38 cases. A total of 15 cases were reported from Kottayam, while Wayanad reported 10 cases.
