THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In another development in the gold smuggling case, a Kerala police officer functioning as personal security officer of the UAE consul general was found with his veins cut at an isolated place near his residence at Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram. Civil police officer Jayaghosh was reported missing since Thursday evening and he was located by some passersby around noon on Friday.
Police said Jayaghosh was found lying in a semiunconscious state and he had lost a lot of blood.
They suspect a suicide attempt but said a comprehensive probe was needed to confirm it. He has been admitted to Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital and his condition is reportedly stable.
The consignment containing gold was addressed to attache Rashid Khamis Al Sheimeili, who was holding the charge in the absence of the consul general. He had left for the UAE on Sunday after he was reportedly recalled.
The family of Jayaghosh, an officer on the rolls of Thiruvananthapuram armed reserve camp, had filed a man-missing complaint with Thumba police.
He was under stress, said family’s plaint
The complaint said he had received threats from those involved in the gold smuggling and he was under stress.
Intelligence sources also said Jayaghosh — who has been attached to the UAE consulate for over a year now — has been reportedly upset for the past few days and it should be probed if he knew anything about the gold smuggling.
The customs department had seized the consignment, sent by accused Faisal Fareed from the UAE, on July 5. The call records of prime accused Swapna Suresh have shown that she had contacted Jayaghosh on his phone on the day. She had also contacted the attaché many times till July 5.

Swapna has claimed, in her bail petition, that she had contacted the customs officials at the cargo complex of Thiruvananthapuram airport on instructions of the attaché and as part of her official duties as she was the parttime secretary of the consular general.
The customs and NIA sleuths had questioned some contract employees of the UAE consulate as part of their probe. It is learnt that the police will prepare a detailed report on the incident and will hand it over to the NIA if required.
