THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The department of women and child department has roped in actor
Tovino Thomas as the goodwill ambassador for its efforts for eliminating the practice of dowry from the state.
The department is striving to root out the practice of dowry from the state in the next five years, said women and child development minister
K K Shailaja. “The department has decided to observe November 26 as
anti-dowry day,” she said.
Though offering and accepting dowry is illegal, dowry is still prevalent in the state. “So, there needs to be a strong campaign among the youngsters against this and it is part of such an effort that the actor has been roped in,” she said.
The dowry prohibition act was passed in 1961 and the rules were framed in 1992 which was again revised in 2004, but still the dowry system is strong. The state-wide observation of anti-dowry day will be held in
Palakkad on November 26 in which the actor will be the chief guest.
A contest is also being held on social media for creating memes against dowry and the best meme will be rewarded at the function in Palakkad.
