THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The local bodies should lay thrust on resistance to climate change while implementing waste management projects, said minister for devaswom and tourism Kadakampally Surendran. Speaking at the zero waste national conference being organised by city corporation at University college in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, the minister said that incineration is not effective for waste management in the state since the bio-degradable waste has high moisture content.
Decentralised, source level waste management suits the policy of state government, he said.
MLA V K Prasanth, who took part in one of the sessions, said that during marriage feasts, people should take care not to waste food. "They have to be trained in taking only what is essential. Preventing wastage of food is more important than waste management following marriage feast," said V K Prasanth.
The three-day national conference will conclude with a plenary session on Monday. Networking of zero waste cities will also be held on the final day. LSG minister AC Moideen will inaugurate the concluding convention of zero waste national conference. T N Seema, executive vice chairperson, Haritha Keralam mission will be present on the occasion.
Mayor K Sreekumar said that the zero waste conference witnessed the demonstration of model projects, presentation by experts and sharing of experience on successful models of waste management by city corporation.
