Thousands of devotees witness Big Temple consecration

Amidst chanting of Vedic hymns and 'Nama Shivaya and Shivaya Namaha’, the consecration of the historic Brihadeeswarar Temple (Big Temple) was performed on a grand scale manner after a gap of 23 years in Thanjavur on Wednesday.

THANJAVUR: Amidst chanting of Vedic hymns and 'Nama Shivaya and Shivaya Namaha’, the consecration of the historic Brihadeeswarar Temple (Big Temple) was performed on a grand scale manner after a gap of 23 years in Thanjavur on Wednesday.
Thousands of devotees witnessed the ceremony which was performed both in Sanskrit as well as Tamil. After a long-standing the demand put forth by the Big Temple Rights Retrieval Committee came true following the court direction, coordinator of the committee P Maniarasan said.
The ceremony was much debated after it ran into controversy on whether the rituals were to be conducted in Tamil or Sanskrit.
A group of Odhuvars recited Thirgnanasambandhar’s Thiruppathigam before pouring holy waters on the ‘Kalasam’ erected atop the Vimanam (temple tower) of Big Temple after hymns recited by Sanskrit by priests at 9,21 in the morning.
Entire events began on January 27, with Poorvanga puja and eight Kala Yaga pujas commenced in the evening hours on February 1, and concluded with eight Kala puja on the early morning on Wednesday. Following that, holy waters were brought from Ýagasaalai' and taken to temple tower on a procession.
The coordinator of Big Temple Rights Retrieval Committee, who initiated the battle demanding to conduct the ritual in Tamil, P Maniarasan expressed happiness saying that they have owned their battle.
“Our battle to conduct ‘Kumbabishekam’ (consecration) in Tamil at all temples across the state will continue”, he added.
Several departments of the state government such as Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE), Public Works Department, (PWD), Health department, Police department, Tourism department, State Archaeology, Art and Culture department, Revenue, Thanjavur municipal the corporation have made elaborate arrangements to have a hassle-free darshan for devotees.
